Item description
A unique, single issue, ULTRA RARE (only a few known to be in existence) four-page newspaper/magazine in broadsheet size but with the air of a tabloid. It is dated June 22nd, 1978, and consists of an interview between Andy Warhol and Charles Tennant and another between Tennant and the punk model, muse, and actress Jordan (aka Pamela Rooke). Tennant was the son of Colin Tennant, the hyperactive socialite who owned Mustique and, at one point, almost became Prince Margaret. The interview with Warhol therefore has a certain amount to say about sex and Princesses (knobs and nobs). Warhol is a brilliant interviewer, flirting with Tennant, referring throughout to his beauty, privilege, and good fortune, and generally playing on his vanity.
The interview with Jordan conjures up another world, that of the 1970s King’s Road punk. Jordan had been in Derek Jarman’s Jubilee and was an early manager of Adam and the Ants (both of which get mentions here). She is now a veterinary nurse and breeds Burmese cats. Charles Tennant appeared to be a mixture of Narcissus and Icarus. He was photographed by Lichfield and Mapplethorpe but died at 39 after a short, fast life.
The Chelsea Scoop ran for only one issue. It is therefore very scarce. This is an excellent copy in fine condition with four creases running horizontally and vertically across it where it has been folded like a newspaper. Please look carefully at pictures for accurate description.
We have never seen this before. We had never even heard of it before. It was a complete surprise. It is the first (and very likely only) issue of The Chelsea Scoop. A large format night-life newspaper that was part Ritz , part Sniffin Glue and part News of The World. The Chelsea Scoop was published in London in 1978 by the 21 year old Charlie Tennant.
The Warhol interview is amazingly candid. Warhol is clearly very keen on the young nobleman (who, it should be noted, was the cousin of Stella Tennant and not bad looking himself). Numerous attempts are made by Warhol to steer the conversation towards sex and how adorable Charles is in general. The above transcript is fairly typical and gives rise to the brilliant 'most modern person' accolade.
Charlie, aka Charles Tennant, was the son of Colin Tennant aka Baron Glenconner, the world class socialite who owned Mustique. Charlie had travelled to New York, had met Warhol and returned to London to take on the punk scene and publish his magazine. Warhol and punk superstar Jordan are the big interviews in this first/last issue.
