Item description
Tight, flat, square, sharp and clean book with owner's name on the FFEP. Spine sunned. Head and tail rubbed and chipped. Corners bumped and rubbed. Color frontis piece, black and white illustrations within. Vertical cursive (script) and large print typography. See pictures. This is a primer for reading students in the early years of the 20th century, it is a fantastic book. Copyrighted in 1898, my book belonged to my Uncle David, born in 1916. He must have loved reading of the young Indian brave growing up in the forest with his grandmother. The primer keeps the rhythm and language of Longfellow's poem. The first chapters are quite repetitive as the author is attempting to control the vocabulary introduced to the young reader, but builds and expands as the story progresses.
It remained in print until 1928, and has returned to print by the usual print on demand presses.
