Item description
The White House Gallery of Official Portraits Of The Presidents.
Hardcover
Publisher: The Gravure Co of America, 1906
This is The White House Gallery of Official Portraits of the Presidents, 25* Presidents in all. It has 25 full-page richly engraved presidential portraits, each with a facsimile signature, from Washington to Theodore Roosevelt. . Each has a tissue between the portrait and a full page biography. Each biography page has 2 light sanguine illustrations of events for that presidency in the margins. It is a large oversized book that was leather bound, most of the leather dried up and crumbled off with the boards becoming loose. This book has been professionally restored and rebound with tight freshly covered boards that will protect it for another 100 plus years. It has a round, thick gilded metal Presidential seal on the cover. Book size is 20 x 16. These books were not sold but published in a limited edition, given to individuals and numbered, the name of the recipient was hand written into each book, this one for J. E. Mahoney and numbered 3263.
James Edward Mahoney (December 15, 1859 ? June 9, 1926) was an American officer born in Peabody, Massachusetts and serving in the United States Marine Corps during the Spanish?American War who was one of 23 Marine Corps officers approved to receive the Marine Corps Brevet Medal for bravery. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1881. He subsequently served in Panama, Veracruz, Mexico, and in Cuba. After promotion to temporary rank of Brigadier General, he retired as a Colonel of Marines in 1919.
*Because Grover Cleveland served 2 terms nonconsecutively he is considered the 22nd and 24th president. Teddy Roosevelt was the 26th president so the Cleveland anomaly is the reason there are only 25 presidents in this book.
