36. This is obviously a former World Champion Stock driver who gets into his work. Jerry McClanahan may seem quiet and average on the surface, but he accomplishes some extraordinary things. Bruce Caldwell drew the assignment of camping out in McClanahan's pickup truck for the two days of the Irwindale Winston World Championship Series event to find out what makes him tick. McClanahan was the lucky one: When he lost early, he got to go home. Caldwell still had six hours at teardown staring him in the face.
63. This picture is dark because that's the way it gets around midnight. What you can't see is that it is also cold and there is transmission fluid dripping out of the Bracket Bird transmission onto: the president of Turbo-Action Transmissions. Paul Forte said his "Cheetah" manual valve bodies were easy to install. He volunteered and we agreed in our best Tom Sawyer voice. After all, cold driveways are tough on the old lumbago...
26. Why does this 11-second bracke racer/street freak have all those silly travel decals in the back window? Because it has been out on the open road collecting dead bugs along with thousands of campers, station wagons and cross country truckers. CC's intrepid Bruce Caldwell went along for the ride and he's got the bugs in his teeth to prove it.
