Item description
“TARO” – Child Portrait
Porcelain Miniature by EDNA HIBEL
“TARO” – from a series of four porcelain "miniatures" by Edna Hibel entitled, each featuring a small Oriental child, and each available in at least six different color combinations. This one has teal green background. This one is numbered 49 out of 300 in the teal "section" with a total of 2,000 for all he color combinations of TARO.
This is a small porcelain plaque which Hibel Corp referred to as a "Miniature", heavily decorated in gold. The plaque is slightly convex (rounded out in the center) and fairly heavy. Approximately 2 7/8 inches in diameter. My understanding is that these were originally sold mounted on frames in groups of 2, 3 or 4. I bought this one directly from Hibel Corp when it was going out of business.
I have seen a photo of one made into a very eye-catching brooch on a woman's jacket. It could be used to decorate the top of a box or paperweight, or it could be displayed like a miniature painting on a small stand.
Edna Hibel was one of the most well-respected artists of our time. From 1934 to 1939, she studied at the prestigious Boston Museum of Fine Art, and, at age 22, became the youngest artist ever to exhibit in a major American museum. She has had major exhibitions all over the world, and was the first American woman to exhibit in Jerusalem and the People’s Republic of China.
EXCELLENT CONDITION -- no chips, cracks, repairs or other damage. Issued in a Limited Edition of just 2000 miniature plaques -- a very small number for any Hibel collectible. This is old dealer stock, never previously displayed or sold at retail. Made in West Germany (pre-1989).
