Item description
The result of a cross between the purple flowering H. vernalis 'Amethyst' and
decidedly early blooming H. vernalis 'Holden'. The result is a pale orange
blooming witch hazel that begins its floral display in November rather than
the mid to late winter bloom period long associated with this species.
Mature Size : 10-12' x 8-10'
Hardiness Zone : 5,8
Vernal witch-hazel has yellow and orange-red flowers with a spicy fragrance
that appear In late winter or very early spring, before the leaves unfurl,
lasting three to four weeks. The new foliage is an attractive bronzy-red color
that matures to dark green. It turns a rich buttery yellow to golden yellow
in fall. The dried leaves often persist into winter. The fruit capsules mature
in September or October, then split open to expel black seeds that are attractive to birds.
The plants can sucker to form colonies. This is a great specimen plant for a naturalized landscape.
Germination
Scarification: Soak in water, let stand in water for 24 hours.
Stratification: warm stratify for 120 days, cold stratify for 90 days.
Germination: sow seed 1/4" deep, tamp the soil, mulch the seed bed.
Other: Sporadic germination may occur over a 2-3 year period.
