Item description
Title: Oh Promise Me
Artist:
Publisher: G. Schirmer, Inc.
Copyright/Release Date: 1889 / 1917
Condition: Very good, with the signature of Broadway performer Erno Czako
Comments: As reported in Playbill, Erno Czako (1908-1968) was a singer in the 1947 Broadway production of "High Button Shoes" and in the 1946 production of "Show Boat." This piece of sheet music belonged to him. Oh Promise Me is a song composed by Reginald De Koven with lyrics by Clement Scott. It was written in 1887 and first published in 1889 by G. Schirmer, Inc. as an art song. The song was later included in De Kovens most successful comic opera, Robin Hood, after the contralto playing Alan-a-Dale, Jessie Bartlett Davis, demanded a song to better show off her voice, threatening to walk out of the production. The sheet music sold over a million copies in 1890 and continued to gain popularity for several decades, being performed by many artists. The song remains popular as a wedding song both in America and in the UK.
