Mars and Its Canals by Percival Lowell
The MacMillan Company, 1906 First Edition
(from Wikipedia)
Percival Lawrence Lowell (March 13, 1855 ? November 12, 1916) was an American businessman, author, mathematician, and astronomer who fueled speculation that there were canals on Mars. He founded the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona in 1894. For the next fifteen years he studied Mars extensively, and made intricate drawings of the surface markings as he perceived them. Lowell published his views in three books: Mars (1895), Mars and Its Canals (1906), and Mars As the Abode of Life (1908).
This book is in good condition with some shelf wear on all edges and scratches on both covers. There is a white stain about the size of a half dollar on the front cover. "J A Wolcott" is signed on the illustration of "The San Francisco Peaks" (between pages 18 19). The Signature also appears on page 19. Previous bookseller's sticker is also on the bottom of the front free end paper.
