Tennnesee Williams meets American Gothic western in this unusually harsh drama about a household filled with bitterness, regret, and envy. The dysfunctional Bridges family is snowbound on their ranch and beset by an unseen (and legendary) black panther that's killing their cattle.
Controlling Ma Bridges is condemnatory of both husband and children and has turned self-proclaimed heir apparent Curt (Mitchum) into a bully. Curt's obsession with hunting the cat proves a lesson in arrogance and changes the dynamics of the family.
