U.S. #1145 stamp designer Norman Rockwell was a tremendously popular artist whose work was most commonly featured on the cover of the Saturday Evening Post and Boys’ Life. It was the second stamp issued in honor of the Boy Scouts of America, and was released for the 50th anniversary of the organization in America.
The stamp design pictures 14-year-old Thornton Percival in a Scout uniform, giving the three-fingered Scout Salute. Rockwell used Percival and other local boys from Stockbridge, Massachusetts, in a series of illustrations commissioned by the Boy Scouts of America. Percival became nationally recognized as the “face of the Boy Scouts.” However, he never became a Scout.
