(Internal #V-499-3) You are bidding on a beautiful, handmade, bead necklace with Two women?s faces surrounded by grapes, scrolled design around them (reproduction Victorian) brass piece pendant measures 4-5/8? wide x 2? tall with Black onyx specialty faceted beads (20x10 oblong and 5mm round) and Cinnabar beads ? oval turned beads 17x9mm. Necklace is 12.5? either side down to pendant, drilled and attached to pendant. Full measurement from safety clasp to bottom of pendant: 15? Gold safety clasp closure. This is a lovely necklace! Isn't the ore CINNABAR toxic? Indeed it is! The mercury in cinnabar is what caused hat makers more than a century ago to go mad (i.e. "mad hatter" as in Alice in Wonderland). Later, cinnabar was ground up, filtered to remove toxins, and used as a pigment in artist's oil paint called "burnt sienna". Today, when you see cinnabar beads, boxes or vases, etc. the only link to cinnabar is the color, as cinnabar is not used in the burnt sienna color any longer.
