Item description
Queen Elizabeth QE II 1975-1980 J B Page United Kingdom Florence Nightingale 10 Pound Circulated Bank Note
This listing is for one (1) circulated 10 note I have had in my possession from a trip to the UK in June, 1980. It features a beautiful depiction of Queen Elizabeth II on the front, and the founder of modern nursing, Florence Nightingale on the back. This note is from the Series D pictorial series issues between 1975 and 1992, although this particular note dates to pre June 1980. I have blurred out the serial number in the photos, it begins with D53 and the balance of the number can be provided through messages. It was while J B Page was Chief Cashier at the Bank of England that the Pictorial 10 was first introduced. This was in 1975. Through a series of Chief Cashiers and a few design tweaks, it was to last until 1992 when the Historical Series replaced it. The front has the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II while the back features a portrait of Florence Nightingale alongside a vignette of her hospital work at Scutari during the Crimean War.
Florence Nightingale was an English social reformer, statistician, and the founder of modern nursing. Nightingale came to prominence while serving as a manager and trainer of nurses during the Crimean War, in which she organized care for wounded soldiers at Constantinople. She significantly reduced death rates by improving hygiene and living standards. Nightingale gave nursing a favorable reputation and became an icon of Victorian culture, especially in the persona of "The Lady with the Lamp" making rounds of wounded soldiers at night.
