Item description
Brand new factory sealed dvd is a re-make of the 1968 classic.
In the year 2029 the Space Force station Oberon is threatened by an approaching space storm. A trained chimp in a space pod is sent in to retrieve data. The signal is lost and cocky Captain Leo Davidson (Wahlberg) takes an unauthorized trip into the storm to retrieve his monkey. His pod is likewise overtaken by the storm and he crashes on a lush green planet.
Captured almost at once by the army of Chimpanzee's?! and transported into town in a cage he observes:
A simean organ grinder whose human dwarf collects coins from delighted onlookers, ape kids playing basketball, and ape juveniles smoking a bong in a dark corner. He is taken to the human pet store of the orangutan Limbo (Paul Giamatti).
With the help of the requisite pretty cavegirl, her younger brother, and their haggard father (Kris Kristofferson), they escape and enlist the help of chimpanzee human rights activist, Ari (Helena Bonham-Carter). Retrieving a compass from his crash site, Leo intercepts a homing signal from his mothership verifying that his shipmates have followed him to this planet and are probably searching for him--but the signal originates from the "Forbidden Zone", a remote desert area where no ape is allowed to go...
This is a great re-imagining with Rick Baker's Oscar nominated make-up FX and to me is the best one in the entire series. The Danny Elfman score also captures the right jungle flavor beat. Their is more brevity here to be sure and the story is differant in many ways. The ending is also a twisted shocker that doesn't simply repeat the original, but it will leave you begging for a sequel that never happened.
