LYNN BOGUE HUNT (1878-1960)
Born in Honeoye Falls, New York, (near Rochester) in 1878, Lynn Bogue Hunt soon moved with his family to Albion, Michigan. His family ran a small sawmill operation. He grew up with modest means, but spent hours outside exploring the natural surroundings in the woods near his home. He often collected birds and practiced taxidermy, a hobby that led to his accurate portrayal of his wildlife subjects. With the support and encouragement of his mother, he kept a menagerie of wild pets; spent as much time as he could hunting, observing nature, and simply tramping around outdoors; learned taxidermy when he was in his teens; and sketched constantly from the time he was a little boy.
While still in high school he took painting lessons from a professor at Albion College, and in 1897, while a student at Albion himself, he made his debut on the national stage with “A King of Game Birds,” a ruffed grouse story for Sports Afield that he both wrote and illustrated.
A signal event in Hunt’s career came in 1917, the year he turned 39. That’s when DuPont published Our American Game Birds, a magnificent portfolio of 18 full-color Hunt reproductions of upland gamebirds, shorebirds, and waterfowl. It became wildly popular with sportsmen, putting Hunt on the map and firmly establishing him as the gamebird artist of his time.
Hunt contributed illustrations to his own articles, as well as cover illustrations in magazines such as "Field Stream," "Sports Afield," and "Free Press." In his lifetime he painted for private collectors, companies, such as DuPont, and illustrated over forty books and produced roughly two-hundred-fifty magazine covers. Though he spent much of his life in New York City, far from nature, Hunt had a strong foundation as a knowledgeable outdoorsman, bird hunter, fisherman, and artist who accurately captured the essence of the outdoors.
