Paris: Librairie Artistique Internationale, [no date] (ca. 1900).
No edition stated.
An antique art book on the works of Dutch painter Jozef Israëls (1824-1911). Born of Jewish parents, Israëls was one of the most important painters of the latter 19th century. Judging from the examples in this book, it seemed his favorite subjects were displaced and poor people; and he captured their despair perfectly on canvas. You can feel the sense of hopelessness in these people. That's the true mark of genius and talent. A fascinating book.
In French. Green wraps with raised titles and geometric patterns on front. Quarto; size is 9-3/4" by 12-1/4". Illustrated in b/w and color. 79 pages plus one page of publishers advertisements.
An entry in the L'Art et le Beau series of monographs.
Text in French.
Faint rubber-stamped name and address to half-title, scattered foxing within and to page edges, mild wear and nicking to edges of covers, offsetting to rear cover, fading to spine and covers; thus very good plus; in decorative cardstock covers.
The Dutch realist's work is represented in a frontispiece engraving protected by a decorative tissue guard, 2 four-color plates, 52 b w reproductions on coated stock inserts of paintings and drawings, 8 margin sketches.
Extensive commentary in French.
