Item description
ANNE'S TERRIBLE GOOD NATURE:
And Other Stories For Children
by E. [Edward] V.[Verrall] Lucas
Illustrated by A.H. Buckland
London: Chatto Windus, 1908.
First edition.
Twelve engaging illustrations on black-and-white plates by A.H. Buckland.
A delightful collection of vintage stories featuring children who gain knowledge about life through their adventures. The tales seem to portray real life of the time period, and offering the reader a glimpse of foregone days and customs.
Lucas was on the writing staff for Punch magazine his entire life, which connected him with extremely creative authors including A.A. Milne, J.M. Barrie, A.C. Doyle, Max Beerbohm and many more. Lucas was such a prolific writer in all genres and subjects that Beerbohm claimed he wrote more words than he spoke. Frank Swinnerton stated that Lucas read a character with wisdom and gravely turned it to fun.
These stories have believable and well-developed characters and the tales have a twist of wit and whimsy.
Embossed multi-colored illustration with gilt titles to the front cover and to the spine, top pages edges gilt, minor rubbing to covers, front inner hinge cracked but still holding well, very light internal foxing, else very good.
A lovely vintage children's book in a beautifully decorative binding.
Octavo; 262 pages.
