Item description

water container made from bamboo and sealed with natural tree resin.BUCKET Khu Khee See, also known as Khu Mai Boran (traditional bamboo vessel), is a traditional Thai container that reflects the local wisdom of the past, particularly in the northeastern region of Thailand. It is made by tightly weaving bamboo strips, then coating both the interior and exterior with natural tree resin to seal the gaps between the bamboo strips, allowing it to hold water without leaking. The resin used is typically derived from native trees such as redwood, toothbrush tree (Streblus asper), or other hardwoods. Once dried, the resin becomes hard, sticky, and waterproof. The process of making Khu Khee See not only demonstrates skilled bamboo weaving techniques but also requires knowledge in selecting appropriate natural materials. For example, the bamboo must be flexible and not prone to cracking, and the tree resin must be carefully prepared?often boiled or mixed?to be ready for application. Applying the resin is a crucial step, as it acts like glue and a protective coating, strengthening the container and making it watertight even after prolonged use. This type of container was once commonly used in daily life?for drawing water from streams, soaking sticky rice, or as part of traditional rituals. Khu Khee See represents a resourceful and sustainable use of natural materials, exemplifying Thai ingenuity in harmonizing craftsmanship with nature. It also reflects the simple, self-reliant lifestyle of the past, where people lived in balance with the environment. Although its usage has declined in modern times, efforts to preserve and revive the craft continue, with the aim of passing this cultural heritage on to future generations
