Item description
SHAKER:
Life, Work, and Art
by June Sprigg and David Larkin
Photographs by Michael Freeman.
New York: Stewart, Tabori, Chang (1987).
First edition, first printing.
SIGNED to the front end-paper by June Sprigg.
Ms. Sprigg is a renowned expert on Shakers, and the Curator of Collections at the Hancock Shaker Villager in Massachusetts. She has authored three other books on the Shakers.
The Shakers, a 19th-century utopian communal society, have deeded their tradition of simplicity to American culture, most notably their functional designs. Shaker furnishings are highly sought-after collectibles. In this handsomely designed and lavishly illustrated (200 color photographs) survey of Shaker communities and their lifestyles, the full flowering of founder Ann Lee's dissidence from the Anglican Church may be viewed.
The striking photographs in this work of Shaker handiwork, oval boxes, furniture, basket weaving, clothing, tools, silk textiles, home decor, and more, capture their essence.
Fine in tan linen with brown titles embossed to the spine; in a fine dust jacket.
A very presentable Gift item.
Quarto. 272 pages; selected bibliography; index to photographs.
