This is an incredible antique black silk bustle gown dress from the Civil War era, dating back to the 1860s/1870s. It is an extremely rare and unique piece that any fashion historian would be proud to add to their collection. The dress boasts a fully gathered back with ample room for a generous bustle, while the front has a flat style. It is secured with hooks and eyes and has stays, most likely made of whalebone, celluloid, or metal, although I cannot confirm. The dress is almost complete with all of its original buttons and is entirely lined with polished brown cotton of the era. Although the silk taffeta has some breaks, as shown under the arms and bodice, it is in good condition overall, considering its age. Due to its 22" waist and slightly dropped shoulders, I would not recommend wearing it, but it would make a spectacular display piece. The skirt is also incredibly full, adding to its charm. ( I didn't have a big hoop skirt to go under it, but just know you could put one in to fill it out. The bottom has 160" circumference) There is some hand stitching and some machine stitching.
