Item description

Angel Island 1941. Heimatsgrusse von der Columbus Greetings from Columbus. San Francisco Bay, California. Known as the Ellis Island of the West, this 740 acre island was originally built as an immigration station in 1910. During WWI, German citizens, most from ships harbored along the west coast, were temporarily interned has "enemy aliens" until they were sent to permanent detention facilities in North Carolina. In December 1939, the crew of the German liner SS. Columbus, scuttled her rather than risk capture by the British. The passengers and approx 400 man crew turned themselves over to a U.S. ship, and were taken to Ellis Island and then onto Angel Island. They remained as 'Guests' of the govrnment, until they were sent to Fort Stanton, New Mexico in 1941. Brass ashtray is used. Weighs 9-3/8 by itself 6-1/4" in diamter. Shipping is $10.95 to anywhere in the USA. International shipping rates apply.
