Item description
Rowan Tree – European Mountain Ash (Sorbus aucuparia), 50 Seeds
Fast-Growing Ornamental Tree with Striking Fall Berries
Native to Europe and Asia, the European Mountain Ash—commonly known as Rowan—is a fast-growing deciduous tree or large shrub admired for its elegant shape, showy white flowers, and clusters of bright orange-red berries. This tree thrives in cooler climates and has become a popular ornamental choice in North America, especially in Canada and the northern U.S., where it has even naturalized in the wild.
? Key Features:
Height Spread: Grows 20 to 40 feet tall with a spread of 8 to 20 feet.
Form: Narrow, upright-oval crown when young; becomes broader and more open with age.
Leaves: Compound, pinnate green foliage with 9 to 15 serrated leaflets. In fall, leaves transform into a stunning display of yellow to reddish-purple.
Flowers: Small, white, 5-petaled blooms appear in flat-topped clusters (3–5") in May, creating a beautiful spring show.
Fruit: Clusters of bright orange-red berry-like pomes ripen in late summer. Though bitter when raw, they are often used in traditional jellies and preserves—especially in the UK as an accompaniment to game meat.
Bark Twigs: Smooth, silvery-gray bark in youth, becoming scaly with age. Twigs are gray-brown with prominent buds and leaf scars.
? Wildlife Cultural Notes:
Rowan berries are beloved by birds, making the tree a great choice for wildlife gardens.
In folklore, Rowan has long been considered a protective tree, especially in the British Isles, where it was planted near homes to ward off evil.
The name “Rowan” comes from an old Norse word meaning “red,” referring to its brilliant fruit.
