The Chusan Palm Wagnerianus is smaller and more compact than its big sister the Trachycarpus fortunei and therefore even better suited for the cultivation as a tub plant. Its firm, deep dark-green and semicircular fronds become not more than 60 cm big and create a neatly folded, decorative face. The stem is covered by the typical fiber mesh. Since the plant rarely sheds any leaves, it is evergreen, except the bottom part of the stem. The Chusan Palm Wagnerianus tolerates heat and is frost-resistant up to -18 Celsius. Natural Location: The origin of the Chusan Palm Wagnerianus is unknown since there are no findings of the species in its natural habitat so far. The horticulturist Albert Wagner from Leipzig, Germany first brought the plant to Europe and named it. Cultivation: The best time for seed propagation indoors is between January and October. To increase the germinability, you can place the seeds for about 12 hours in warm water for priming. Then, plant the seeds into moist potting compost, put just a little compost earth on top, and cover the seed container with clear film to prevent the earth from drying out. Dont forget to make some holes in the clear film and take it every second or third day completely off for about 2 hours. That way you avoid mold formation on your potting compost. Place: The Chusan Palm Wagnerianus prefers a bright, airy and sunny place. A half-shaded place is possible as well, but then it will grow rather slow. In an ideal environment the plant can grow up to 30 cm a year. Since its fronds are less prone to be torn, you can keep your palm tree even in a windy spot. Care: The Chusan Palm Wagnerianus is rather carefree and can best be cultivated in a temperate environment. Just keep it modestly moist without waterlogging and see that you use preferably lime-deficient water since too much lime might harm the plant on the longer run. During Winter: Young palms and tub plants are ideally kept in a bright and cool room during winter, where they need only modest watering. Matured plants and after four years outdoor planted palms prefer to hibernate in the garden near a heat-preserving wall. If you are expecting temperatures below -10 Celsius, a frost protection for the root area and the leaves of the plant with jute- or coconut-matting is recommended. Older plants can tolerate frost up to 17 Celsius.
