Item description
Offered here is a vintage original 11x14 in. US lobby card from the silent film drama/romance THE WHITE ROSE, released in 1923 by United Artists and directed by D.W. Griffith. A wealthy young Southern aristocrat, Joseph (Ivor Novello),
graduates from a seminary and, before he takes charge of his assigned parish,
decides to go out and see what "the real world" is all about. He
winds-up in New Orleans and finds himself attracted to a poor, unsophisticated
orphan girl, Bessie (Mae Marsh). One thing leads to another, and before long Bessie finds
that she is pregnant with Joseph's child.
The image features an interior long shot depicting a tranquil scene as John White (Neil Hamilton) reads a book by lamp light as his aunt (Kate Bruce), sitting in a rocking chair smoking a pipe, looks across at the Man of the World (Erville Alderson) while he sleeps in his rocking chair. The border artwork at the right features a solitary white rose and a design with different colored circles. The lobby card set for this film was issued in both a "flat" and "glossy" (or vanish) style and this card represents the glossy style. In addition, the glossy style features three butterflies in the border artwork at the right and bottom which do not appear on the flat style cards. This vintage original lobby card is unrestored in near-fine condition with one enlarged pinhole in the top left corner and one pinhole in the other three corners; a 2 in. diagonal crease on the top left corner; a 2 in. diagonal scratch on Hamilton's left shoulder that goes upwards into the background area; light signs of wear on the top right corner; a 1 in. and 0.75 in. crease on the bottom right corner; a 1.5 in. diagonal crease on the bottom left corner; a jagged 1 in. diagonal crease on the chest and left shoulder of Erville Alderson; and light staining along the left edge. The beautiful color tints are fresh and vibrant without any signs of fading.
Provenance: The John T. Hillman and Marcelo Coronado Collection.
The
White Rose was the final screen collaboration between Mae Marsh and
director D.W. Griffith. It was the only American film that Ivor
Novello appeared in and was one of two films that
Mae Marsh starred in with Novello. The original print was hand-tinted
in soft pinks and greens. Neil Hamilton is perhaps best remembered today for his role of "Commissioner Gordon" on the classic 1960's television series Batman.
