WINTER COUNT by D. Chief Eagle Printed by Dentan-Berkeland, 1967 Signed First Edition Condition: VG+ to NF in Good+ DJ Orphaned as a child, D. Chief Eagle was raised by the elders of his tribe. As a young man, he served as a Marine in World War II and attended college, going on to become a writer, composer, poet and artist of Indian life. In this book, he tells the story of the Teton Sioux from 1874 to 1890 in novel form. There are decorated endpapers. The book is signed and inscribed by the author on the title page. A newspaper clipping advertising the autograph session is laid in.I noticed that the front cover has a bit of a curve -- it's definitely not quite straight. Otherwise, the book is in lovely condition with white pages and no writing, other than the author's. The jacket has a number of edge tears and the spine appears a bit sunned. This is an interesting view of western U.S. history, including the Battle of the Little Bighorn, from a Native American viewpoint.
