History on Luther Travis -- Influential designer and executive, well-respected artist, passionate horticulturist Luther S. Travis, 91, of New Hope, Pa., passed away on March 18, 2019, at his home. Luther was born in Cape Charles, on the eastern shore of Virginia, and grew up in the Ghent district of Norfolk, Va. He studied interior design at Parsons School of Design, and returned to Virginia to receive a BA in interior design and fine arts at the College of William and Mary. Returning to Parsons, he went on to receive a certificate in textile design. As a freelance designer, Luther was one of the first names to be used in designer-name collections. He designed bed and bath linens, a wide variety of drapery and textile designs, wallpaper, wrapping paper, and table linens for Fallani and Cohn. In 1956, he joined Bloomcraft, Inc. His influence was largely responsible for Bloomcraft's leadership in printed fabrics. He retired from Bloomcraft as Vice President of Design. After leaving Bloomcraft, Luther went of to form the London based Trull-Travis Design Associates, Ltd. As a well-respected artist, Luther's illustrations were a part of the select American Artists Christmas Card Collection for many years. Luther was a passionate horticulturalist, was a member of the American Hemerocallis Society (AHS) and spent much of his time in his gardens. As an orchidist, Luther was an award-winning member of the AOS (Cypripedium Kentuckiense "Travis" CHM/AOS). Luther's insatiable curiosity constantly exposed him to creative inspirations. To satisfy his ardent interest in architecture and fine arts, he visited most of the major museums in the world. He examined ancient ruins, tramped through jungles, and climbed mountains to see and study with the discerning eye of the talented artist. Every experience became part of his talent.
