The Electric Boat Company, founded in 1899 by Isaac Rice, is a pioneering American shipbuilding firm best known for its role in developing submarines for the United States Navy. Originally partnering with inventor John Philip Holland, the company built the Navy?s first commissioned submarine, the USS Holland (SS-1). Based in Groton, Connecticut, Electric Boat played a critical role in advancing submarine technology throughout the 20th century, from early diesel-powered designs to modern nuclear-powered vessels. Now a division of General Dynamics, it continues to be a leading builder of submarines, including the current Virginia-class and upcoming Columbia-class ballistic missile submarines.
The USS Gato (SS-212) was the lead ship of the Gato-class submarines in the U.S. Navy during World War II and played a significant role in the Pacific theater. Commissioned in December 1941, shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Gatoconducted numerous war patrols, targeting Japanese shipping and contributing to the U.S. Navy's submarine campaign that disrupted enemy supply lines. These patrols were crucial in diminishing Japan?s maritime capabilities. The Gato-class set the standard for U.S. submarines during the war, featuring improved range, endurance, and firepower. After the war, USS Gato served in training roles before being decommissioned and eventually scrapped in the 1960s.
