Item description
This is an original WWII era desktop ornament with the model
of a Stuka dive bomber and a photo frame / pocket watch stand.
This is the real deal. Period manufactured, not a post-war
item.
All original and unmolested.
Length of the aircraft is 10cm. Wingspan is 12cm.
This item would have been on the desk of a Luftwaffe officer.
Early WWII era, France and Netherlands.
The base bears the enamel insignia of Gruppe I. of JG 1.
I./JG 1 was formed in 1940 in the Netherlands.
I./JG 1 consisted of one Headquarters Flight (Gruppenstab)
and 1., 2. and 3 Staffel. When the Battle of France commenced on 10 May 1940,
I./JG 1 was put under the administrative control of JG 27. After seeing
extensive service, the group was re-designated III./JG 27 on 5 July 1940.
The Gruppenstab was formed on 1 September and placed under
the command of Major Dr. Erich Mix.
Originally JG 1 was formed only as a single group I./JG 1
under Woldenga. That group was re-designated as III./JG 27. JG 1 thus
temporarily ceased to exist. It was reactivated 7 months later under Schumacher
in November 1939. But a formal I./JG 1 came to exist in September 1941.
On 1 April 1943, I. Gruppe of JG 1 became the II. Gruppe of
JG 11. In consequence, IV. Gruppe of JG 1 became the new I. Gruppe of JG 1
This is a dual purpose item. Photo frame / pocket watch stand.
To make a photo frame you will need to score a 60 mm aluminum disc and a same size glass lens to go in the curved photos holder.
(two round glass discs would also do.)
To make a nice pocket watch holder you would have to cut a 4 or 4.5mm thick metal disc with a small hook at the top to place in the curve.
