Item description
THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR | The Great Courses | 8 DVDs/Guidebook |
New/Sealed
This product is "THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR" by Gary W. Gallagher, a DVD/Guidebook set from The Great Courses. It includes 8 DVDs and a guidebook. The publication year is 2000, and it is in English. The subject area is history, specifically the American Civil War. The educational levels catered to are high school, middle school, adult education, and elementary school. It is published by the Teaching Company, LLC, T.H.E. and is sealed.
The Civil War, which lasted from 1861 to 1865, saw the conflict of the Western hemisphere's finest armies, giving little towns, little-known waterways, and isolated pastures names that we will never forget. Professor Gary W. Gallagher, a leading authority on the Civil War, provides a thorough understanding of the war's effects on all Americans, including how armies were recruited, equipped, and trained, the harsh conditions of prisoners, and how soldiers on both sides dealt with the rigors of camp life, campaigns, and the terror of battle.
The course also emphasizes the dynamic interplay between the battlefield, the home front, and the diplomatic front, as well as the sacrifices made by all Americans during this conflict. Half of all males of military age in the North enlisted in the Civil War, whereas almost 80% of all men of military age in the South served.
Off the battlefield, life was not much better, with two-thirds of the soldiers who died during the conflict, on both sides, dying of sickness and one-third dying from battlefield wounds or being slain on the battlefield. On the home front, conditions were frequently just as dire, with a Confederate soldier earning $11 per month for much of the conflict.
The Union and Confederacy's war goals, why each side picked the tactics they did, how close the South came to victory, Lincoln's administration, and how each side's views changed as the devastation reached an unimaginable scale are among the key topics covered in this course.
The Great Courses, formerly known as The Teaching Company, offers a wide range of educational DVD courses and lectures taught by professors from leading universities. These courses cover various subjects, including history, literature, science, philosophy, and more. Each course typically consists of 8 to 84 lectures, with each lecture lasting about 30 to 45 minutes. The courses are available in both audio and video formats, with the video versions including visual aids like 3D animations, detailed maps, and illustrations to enhance understanding.
