Mexican Folk Art Prudencio Guzmán Ceremonial and similar items

This is an outstanding piece of indigenous folk art imported from Tonala, Mexico. It?s an extraordinary Tastoane mask like those worn during the revered ceremonial fight that takes place every July 25th. This mask was made by the great Tastoan, Prudencio Guzman who has danced with the warriors for decades. It is made from vibrantly painted ceramic and features additional three-dimensional skulls and six curved animal horns erupting from the crown. The painting and detail are phenomenal and the mask is substantial. Tastoanes represent the original tribal peoples who hid in local caves( thus the spiders/snakes/reptiles) as the Spaniards approached. The yearly ritual battle re-enacts the introduction of Spaniards and Christianity into this area of Mexico. This mask measures approximately 15? in height, 14? in width by 9? in depth.
