Founded in 1856, Comanche County remains a relatively sparsely populated region in the Edwards Plateau region of Central Texas. The Texas Central Railroad brought service to the eponymous County Seat in 1885 and helped increase prosperity by exporting cattle and cotton, the main agricultural products of the region in the nineteenth century. By 1890 the region was known for its fertile soil and produced vast quantities of cotton to export to textile mills in the Northeast. The discovery of oil in 1910 and mining would provide a robust local economy for the following decades, though peak production was in 1920. Produced by one of the most influential Land Commissioners in Texas’ history, William Walsh, this map depicts the county in a period of relative stability both culturally and economically in the years following the conclusion of the American Civil War. Walsh would draft many of the land ordinances and complete the initial survey of nearly one million acres granted to become the University of Texas at Austin. The first settlements in the region were brought on by the military trail that would come to be known as the Corn Trail. Comanche is also home to one of the oldest standing wooden courthouses in Texas.
