Item description
Produced and published by one of the most prolific American cartographers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, this depiction shows Gloversville in a period immediately before it would experience a significant expansion in population and industry. The area had been settled as early as 1752 and was primarily populated by Scottish Highlanders, who established small homesteads around the four corners that were formed by the intersection of Fulton and Main Street. In its early years, Gloversville supported one of the largest glove manufacturing industries in the United States, as well as being home to some of the largest regional leather tanneries. The population would nearly triple from 1877 to 1890 as industrialization spurred on economic prosperity throughout the United States.
O.H. Bailey produced a wide variety of birds eye perspectives throughout the Northeast and was among six cartographers responsible for creating more than half of these illustrations. They were a widely popular design during the mid-nineteenth and early twentieth century and bear a unique style that is immediately recognizable and transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present.
Gloversville would continue to grow through World War II and remains an enduring city that bears a rich history and traditional culture. This is an authentic piece of American cartographical history that captures one of the most significant periods of transformation throughout the nation as industrialization, manufacturing, and modernization advanced as the turn of the century loomed and technology became more accessible.
