The regional plat of the city dates back to 1835 when the town was called Stephenson. It was renamed in 1841 and became a prosperous city with trade spurred by steamboats, railroads, and a bridge that spanned the Mississippi. It's home to the Rock Island Arsenal, which has manufactured ordnance and military equipment for the United States Army beginning in the 1880s.
