Item description
Gertrude Stein remains one of the most influential and prolific female writers of the twentieth century, and her home in Paris became a meeting place for some of the most impactful and noted writers, artists, and thinkers of the avant-garde and progressive movements of the time. These figures would shape the face of Western culture for decades and included Pablo Picasso, Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Henri Matisse, and more. Stein was born in Pennsylvania in 1874 and raised in Oakland, California, before finally moving to Paris in 1903, where she would remain with her lifelong partner, Alice Toklas, until her death in 1946.
This 1930 photograph of Stein captures her independent spirit and features a portrait of her painted by Picasso. Stein was a prolific art collector during her time in Paris, in addition to her literary contributions, which continue to be taught and studied today. Her works remain some of the most influential pieces of modernist literature and feminist writing, which became widely popular during the American feminist movement of the 1960s, heavily influenced by Stein’s contributions to poetry, novels, and plays.
Stein’s 1933 work, The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas, written from Toklas’ perspective, became widely popular, bringing Stein out of relative literary obscurity and into mainstream attention. Stein employed stream-of-consciousness techniques to examine the human condition, and her work remains highly influential for authors today, marked by her distinctive use of repetition.
