Additional Information
The largest city and capital of Manitoba, Winnipeg, has a rich history and distinct culture influenced by the early French trappers who settled in the region in the eighteenth century. Located at the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine rivers, Winnipeg was a hub for trading for centuries and became known as the "Gateway to the West." The arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1881 further expanded access, and immigrants from across Western Europe flocked to the city to find welcoming communities based on cultural traditions. Winnipeg was first incorporated in 1873 and experienced a dramatic growth in population during the latter portions of the eighteenth and early parts of the twentieth century.
In 1881 a boom in commercial development occurred that brought more residents and made the city an important economic center for the region in the following decades. Because of its role as a transportation hub Winnipeg developed a thriving wholesaling industry in the late nineteenth century that remains to this day. Winnipeg also developed a flourishing grain trade that was spurred by the vast fields surrounding the city and the seasonal climate, and settlers from Europe brought their farming techniques and skills during the preceding century.
Bird's eye perspectives were widely popular during the eighteenth century and bear a distinctive aesthetic and unique style that immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating a link between the past and present. This detailed piece of Canadian cartographical history depicts Winnipeg's significant growth during the eighteenth century.
