Additional Information
Located some twenty miles northwest of Detroit, Pontiac was founded in 1818 and holds a rich history in the development of the region throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The city was first incorporated in 1861, and many residents flocked to the city to work in the numerous mills and manufacturing facilities located on the banks of the Clinton River. Pontiac enjoyed significant prosperity from the time of this publication through the post-war period in the United States when returning GI's established suburbs surrounding the city.
Following the conclusion of the American Civil War, Pontiac attracted scores of residents eager for economic opportunities as the nation began reconstruction, and the industrial revolution spurred demand for lumber, steel, and other goods in major markets like New York City, Chicago, and San Francisco. With the emergence of the automobile, the city was transformed once again when it became a hub for car manufacturing and the headquarters of the General Motors company.
This bird's eye perspective was produced and published by Albert Ruger, an early pioneer of the form who developed a distinctive aesthetic and unique style that would go on to inspire numerous other lithographers to continue the form until the early 1920s and make panoramic maps widely popular during the nineteenth century. Ruger's work immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present. This is an authentic piece of American cartographical history that illustrates the development and evolution that Pontiac experienced during its history.
