It became an American Territory in 1848 following years of co-occupation by both British and American settlers who relied on a small fur-trading industry with exports to the Eastern seaboard as well as Europe. By 1890 a thriving lumber industry attracted settlers from across America, Canada, Western Europe, and Asia.
