Additional Information
Produced by prominent and prolific American cartographer and illustrator Albert Ruger, this bird's eye perspective of Missouri's State Capital shows the city in a time of significant growth and transformation. Named America's "Most Beautiful Small Town" in 2013 by the iconic American mapmakers Rand-McNally, Jefferson City has long been esteemed in the mid-west for its pastoral beauty and as the home of the Missouri State Capitol Building, which was completed in 1924.
Ruger produced these panoramic views as marketing pieces and featured prominent civic buildings and points of interest. These illustrations were among the most popular from the mid-nineteenth century until the early 1920s and bear a distinctive aesthetic that immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible link between the past and present. Ruger was among five cartographers and publishers who are considered responsible for producing more than half of all bird's eye perspectives.
German immigrants flocked to the region and established numerous communities and vineyards on the banks of the Missouri River, earning the region their nickname of the "Missouri Rhineland." These communities continued to flourish into the twentieth century and have established neighborhoods and wineries that exist to this day.
Missouri was claimed by both Union and Confederate forces during the Civil War, and Jefferson City remained occupied by Union forces for the duration of the conflict. Published four years following the conclusion of the Civil War, this map is truly a unique piece of American cartographical history and testament to the city's place in America's heartland.
Our museum quality giclee print comes printed with archival ink on premium heavyweight matte paper. This eye-catching vintage map reproduction print makes the perfect gift for anyone that loves history and imagery.
