Additional Information
With a history dating back to the sixth millennium BC, Iraq is often referred to as the Cradle of Civilization, having given rise to numerous groundbreaking inventions. Among its contributions are writing systems, timekeeping, mathematical principles, legal codes, sailing and navigation, astrology, and the wheel-all of which have shaped civilizations worldwide. The country's capital and largest city, Baghdad, sits on the banks of the Tigris River and was a center of intellectual and cultural thought during the Islamic Golden Age. However, in 1258, the city suffered devastating destruction during the Mongol invasions, leading to a period of decline exacerbated by plagues and regime changes.
By the time this Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) map was produced, Iraq had undergone another significant transformation in the 20th century. Just a year prior, in 2003, Iraq was invaded by a U.S.-led coalition, resulting in the overthrow of Saddam Hussein, who had held power since 1969. This event triggered sectarian violence, which persisted until 2011. In the years following the Iraq War, the country has re-emerged as a key regional power, bolstered by its vast oil reserves, which continue to spur its economy.
CIA maps play a critical role in geopolitical planning, and this map specifically details Iraq's rail systems, which were instrumental for political and military strategy development.
