ROYAL COPENHAGEN 1939 Christmas Plate SHIP in GREENLAND ICE is the subject of the Royal Copenhagen 1939 Christmas plate, the 32nd plate in the series that began in 1908 and continues to this day. It depicts the sailing ship Gustav Holm, named after the Greenland researcher, in the pack ice off the coast of Greenland, the largest island in the world. Greenland was a Danish crown colony in 1939. The Constitutional Act of 1953 changed Greenland?s status from a crown colony to part of the Danish realm, with their first elected representatives to the Danish Parliament. It is now an autonomous country within the Kingdom of Denmark, although Denmark retains control over foreign affairs, defense and currency. The scene is embossed on Danish porcelain and hand painted in traditional Copenhagen blue under the glaze, approximately 7.25 inches (18 cm) in diameter. Pierced foot for hanging wire.
