Stan Stearns captured this image, which is one of the most published photographs in American history, and was the frontrunner for the Pulitzer Prize in 1964. His influence on photojournalism and American photographic history cannot be underestimated. Stearns served as a United States Air Force photographer before joining United Press International. Stearns was elected President of the White House News Photographers Association in 1969. He later opened a private studio where he captured images of numerous celebrities, political leaders, and other notable figures of the twentieth century. This photograph was taken only three days after JFK's assassination and on John F. Kennedy Jr.'s birthday, which furthered its reputation and symbolic representation as the nation was being transformed by the Vietnam War, Civil Rights Movements, and increasing polarization by political leaders calling for change to the established systems of power.
