Additional Information
American playwright and writer Lorraine Hansberry was the first Black woman to have a play performed on Broadway with her play "A Raisin in the Sun," which took its title from the Langston Hughes poem "Harlem." Hansberry was also the youngest female playwright to have a performance on Broadway and only the fifth woman to do so. Hansberry was a prominent voice whose work frequently discussed the oppression of groups that were not in power or existed outside of standard societal norms. Hansberry's work continues to influence playwrights and activists who find inspiration in her work in both political writings and her plays.
Hansberry was born in Chicago, and her father influenced her political views and even brought a case to the Supreme Court against racial prejudice in housing. The case was resolved in 1938 with the court ruling the restrictive covenants were contestable though not inherently invalid. However, they would be ruled unconstitutional in the court's ruling in Shelley v. Kramer. In 1951, Hansberry joined the staff at the Freedom newspaper, where she worked with prominent Black American activist W.E.B. Du Bois along with other prominent Pan-African activists who promoted a return to Africa by Black Americans and eventually led to the creation of Liberia.
This iconic photograph captures Hansberry only six years prior to her untimely death in 1965. This photo remains an enduring tribute to Hansberry's brief though highly influential career, and it immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating a link to the past and present.
