Additional Information
Born in 1888, Jose Raúl Capablanca y Graupera was a Cuban chess prodigy who gained international attention at just 12 years old when he defeated Cuban champion Juan Corzo in a match in 1901, just two days before his 13th birthday. Capablanca went on to become the World Chess Champion in 1921 after defeating Emanuel Lasker, holding the title for six years before losing to Alexander Alekhine-despite Alekhine having never beaten him in prior matches. From 1916 to 1924, Capablanca remained undefeated, solidifying his reputation as one of the most talented and influential chess players in history.
Capablanca authored Chess Fundamentals, one of the most revered texts on tactical chess strategy, and his playing style, known for its clarity and well-planned endgames, influenced generations of grandmasters, including Bobby Fischer and Anatoly Karpov. He reportedly learned chess at the age of four when he corrected an illegal move by his father and then defeated him in a game. In 1905, Capablanca moved to New York City to attend Columbia University, where he joined the Manhattan Chess Club and quickly became recognized as its strongest player.
This oceanic photograph of Capablanca bears a distinctive aesthetic that illustrates the spirit of the era and Capablanca's determined stare. Capablanca's influence on the game of chess bears an enduring legacy that continues to influence players to this day.
