Additional Information
In this iconic vintage photograph of noted Puerto Rican freedom fighter Pedro Albizu Campos, he can be seen greeting a crowd of supporters in the same year as his arrest for planning armed uprisings in communities across the island aimed at overthrowing the United States rule. Campos was born in 1891 and volunteered in World War serving in the 375th Infantry Division. He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1921 and worked to help draft the constitution of the Irish Free State. He also met with leaders of the efforts for freedom from colonial rule in India, like Subhas Chandra Bose.
He was imprisoned for twenty-six years and died shortly after his release in 1965. Campos remains an enduring figure in the fight for Puerto Rican independence. The island was under Spanish colonial rule for 400 years before being considered a territory of the United States under the conditions of the Treaty of Paris, which marked the conclusion of the Spanish-American War in 1898. These conditions granted Puerto Ricans American citizenship in 1917 though they remain disenfranchised at a national level and cannot vote in Presidential elections. Campos was the President of the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party from 1930 until his death in 1965, and his work there has influenced liberation movements across the globe.
This photo bears a distinctive perspective and immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present. This is a valuable piece of Puerto Rican history depicting Campos' legacy.
