Additional Information
Pictured here in 1912 in iconic Glacier National Park, where the tribe had held territory for centuries, these Blackfeet Braves represent their heritage, which dates back to the seventeenth century in what is now Montana and Canada and remains one of the most storied histories of Indigenous Peoples. This enduring image represents centuries of the SitsikaTribes' life in the area. It bears a distinctive quality that does not immediately place it in the twentieth century and gives the viewer a sense of life in the region before colonialization and the expansion of American culture across the West as railroads increased access and economic opportunities across the United States during the nineteenth century.
Glacier National Park is one of the most recognizable parks in the Northern Hemisphere, comprising more than one million acres. It is home to two mountain ranges featuring a diverse range of flora and fauna, attracting thousands of tourists annually. In 1891, the Great Northern Railway was completed at the park's southern border, which increased access and compelled the company to advertise the region to bring in more tourists attracted to the vast expanses of natural beauty.
This photograph captures the legacy of the Blackfeet and the splendor of Glacier National Park immediately after the turn of the twentieth century as technological advances were changing the landscape of urban areas across the United States and instantly transports the viewer back in time, creating a link to the past.
