Additional Information
Taken by the noted American photographer Charles Milton Bell, this iconic image remains an enduring part of indigenous peoples' quest to regain land through legal means and court battles while adapting to an evolving society in the United States. This photograph features Comanche Chief Quanah Parker, who was appointed by the United States Government to serve as the principal chief of the entire Comanche Tribe and would lead the group in their eventual peaceful surrender at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Parker was the primary emissary of Southwest Indigenous Americans to the Federal Legislature, and he became a successful cattle rancher with land near Cache, Oklahoma.
After Parker's death in 1911, their leadership role became known as the Chairman, which earned him the title of the "Last Chief of the Comanche." Bell was considered one of the best photographers of the late nineteenth century, and his work bears a distinguished tone that reveres his subjects, giving them a rarified appearance while capturing some of the most iconic moments in the Indigenous American's political moments during the time period. The C.M. Bell Collection within the Library of Congress holds more than thirty thousand glass plate negatives and remains an essential piece of American photographic history.
The distinctive aesthetic and classic composition of this photograph immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating a bond between the present and past that illustrates the evolution and development of American culture.
