Item description
Located on the north bank of the Rio Grande River, Laredo, Texas has a rich history and remains one of the largest hubs for international trade between the United States and Mexico. Laredo was founded in 1755 and holds the distinction of having flown seven flags as the geopolitical boundaries changed and evolved through the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This includes the flag of the former Republic of the Rio Grande, which was a brief period of independence for the region from both Mexico and the United States. Laredo's history has been shaped by its location, and it remains one of the most fluid borders in the world, with thousands of people crossing to both the United States and Mexico daily, as well as numerous cargo vehicles.
As the nation approached the turn of the century, Laredo remained one of the largest inland ports and was experiencing significant growth and prosperity as international trade between the two countries grew and banking institutions were established to finance local business. Following the Mexican-American War in 1848, the Mexican Government ceded Laredo to the United States in the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo. As the United States and Texas grew and expanded, Laredo continued to develop a distinct culture and became home to a predominantly Hispanic population that has blended Mexican and American traditions.
Bird's eye perspectives were created as marketing materials to attract residents and merchants alike and feature prominent civic buildings and economic opportunities. This is a unique piece of American cartographical history.
