Item description
THREE TIBETAN MYSTERIES:
TCHRIMEKUNDA;
NANSAL;
DJROAZANMO
As Performed in the Tibetan Monasteries.
Translated, introduced, with notes by H.I. Woolf, from the French version of JACQUES BACOT.
London: George Routledge Sons Ltd., [1928].
First edition thus.
Illustrated from native designs by V. Goloubew.
A volume in the 'Broadway Translation' publication series of foreign literature masterpieces, with complete and definitive texts and explanatory notes, bound in quarter vellum with a leather spine label.
Performed as reflective religious epics, these differently structured plays were performed with character masks by monks, and comprise prologues and interpretive narration mixed with dialogue or verse, that might be chanted, sung and/or danced.
"The world as it appears to the unsophisticated mind; vast, shadowy, marvelous, and controlled by a rough but simple justice"--Golden Hind.
Well-preserved, presentable and elusive vintage collectible.
London bookseller's small address label to the lower edge of the front end-paper, upper and lower spine edges slightly crimped, also mild dust soiling to the spine, light, minor fleck-wear to the front and rear covers, rear advertisement pages lower corners slightly rumpled with a few short marginal tears, else square, firm and very good in cream vellum over apricot linen with gilt embossed titles and border to a leather spine label that shows tiny nicks, cream-apricot marbled end-papers; no dust jacket as issued.
Octavo; 268 pages; index; preface; plus 16 pages of Broadway Translations ads to the rear.
