In 1893, he became a professor in Rostock, then in 1900 he was appointed Head of the Department of Greek Philology at the University of Vienna as Theodor Gompertzs successor. The book was one of the first in Russia to allow domestic readers to familiarize themselves with the history of ancient philosophy.
