CONDITION DESCRIPTION: The marble base has some defect, otherwise it is very well preserved (see additional pictures). This Collection was modeled in wax at the artist's home in Port Lligat, Spain from 1969 to 1976 and acquired by his friend Isidro Clot. "Christ of St John on the Cross" 1974. Salvador Dali's image of 'Christ of Saint John of the Cross' is, undoubtedly, the best known of all his religious works. The painting and sculpture were inspired by a drawing kept in the 'Monastery of the Incarnation' at Avila, done by Saint John of the Cross, who experienced this rapturous vision of Christ. The sculpture is as pure as the painting and represents Christ without a cross, with his body supported by an enormous symbolic nail whose point is driven into a pyramid of stones from Golgotha, which must have been worn and polished by the feet of pilgrims.
