Item description
2000 Non-GMO Peppermint Seeds - Aromatic Herb for Culinary
Peppermint (Mentha piperita, also known as Mentha balsamea Wild) is a hybrid variety of mint, created by crossing watermint and spearmint. Native to regions in Europe and the Middle East, peppermint has spread worldwide and is now cultivated in various climates, making it a popular herb in many areas. Occasionally, it can even be found growing in the wild alongside its original parent plants.
The Mentha genus includes more than 25 species, but peppermint is the most commonly used and cultivated due to its distinctive flavor and aroma. Western peppermint comes from Mentha piperita, while the Chinese variety, also called “Bohe,” is derived from the fresh leaves of Mentha haplocalyx. Both of these plants are renowned for their high menthol and menthone content, which give peppermint its refreshing quality. Peppermint has a long history of use for both culinary and medicinal purposes, making it a timeless addition to herb gardens.
This plant grows well in a range of soil types, but it especially thrives in soil rich in organic material, with plenty of sunlight or partial shade. Its adaptability makes it suitable for nearly all temperate climates, but gardeners often prefer to grow peppermint in pots or planters to control its spreading roots, as it can quickly spread through its rhizomes and take over garden beds if left unchecked.
Peppermint leaves are highly versatile; they can be enjoyed fresh, dried, or even frozen, and are ideal for infusing teas, flavoring dishes, and adding a refreshing aroma. Leaves can also be preserved using salt, sugar, syrups, alcohol, or oils. However, the leaves’ flavor and fragrance peak just before the plant begins to flower. For optimal drying, peppermint can be harvested by cutting the stems just before, or at the beginning of, flowering, around halfway or three-quarters down the stalk. This method allows new shoots to develop and encourages further growth.
While there is some debate about the best drying techniques, many people experiment with different materials, such as plastic or cloth, and drying conditions, like keeping the plant in darkness or sunlight. With its wide range of uses and easy cultivation, peppermint is an invaluable and aromatic herb to grow in any garden, whether for personal use or for its timeless appeal in culinary and medicinal applications.
